July Tips 2024

Electrical Tip: Overview of the Interconnection Rule

The interconnection rule, as noted in NEC 705.11, can be used in place of the 120% rule. If you use the interconnection rule, be sure to verify the following aspects:

1. The tap wires: check that there is enough space for the system to be successfully connected and there is a fusible disconnect (see below).

2. Line side tap rule:

  • The minimum wire size for a line side tap connection is 6AWG. However, If the fuses are 80A, Tap Wire Gauges should be 4 AWG. For the 200A Fuses, You need 4/0 AWG-rated Tap wires (See CTS June).

3. Load side tap rule:

  • Consider the same limitations as a line side tap. The main difference is that with a load side tap, the connection occurs after the main breaker.
